That\u2019s because these card readers look like they are part of the machine. Once a person inserts or swipes their card in one of these fake readers and enters their PIN, criminals can gain access to their money or make purchases. To help you avoid the skim and protect your finances, we have some helpful tips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How to Spot a Skimmer<\/strong><br>The most common form of skimmer is added to the insert slot. Before using an ATM, look closely at the card slot. Does the card reader move at all? Does it feel bulkier or bigger than necessary? If so, it may be a skimmer. Additionally, look at the keypad and card reader slot for tape or glue residue. If the keypad moves at all, try a different ATM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Look out for Extra Cameras<\/strong><br>Some ATM skimming scams use small cameras mounted just above the keypad. These cameras, installed by criminals are there to record your PIN. Anytime you use an ATM or point of sale machine, cover the keypad as you enter your PIN. This is added insurance in the fight against fraud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Always Be Vigilant<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Scrutinize every ATM or checkout device. If you see unrecognizable or suspicious equipment, try a different machine.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be aware of individuals around you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cover the keypad while you type in your PIN.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be cautious of unusual signs or lighting around an ATM or card-reading device.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Get Cash Back While Shopping<\/strong><br>Skip the ATM and opt for cash back at such popular retail stores like Target, Walmart and\/or your grocery store instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Report Skimmers and Scammers &nbsp;<\/strong><br>Report any fraudulent activity you encounter with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at <a href=\"https:\/\/reportfraud.ftc.gov\/#\/\">reportfraud.ftc.gov<\/a>. If you spot a skimmer don\u2019t use it. Instead, contact the police and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lcfcu.org\/access\/access-2\/contact-us\/\">call us<\/a>, especially if you fear you may have accidentally shared your PIN and card details.
