Library of Congress FCU Blog: Beating Romance Scams: How to Protect Your Heart and Your Wallet

Love shouldn’t cost you money or peace of mind. Romance scams are one of the fastest-growing threats, and they’re becoming alarmingly sophisticated. Scammers pose as potential love interests on dating apps or social media, building quick emotional connections, all while setting a financial trap.

Here’s how they operate, how to spot red flags, and what LCFCU members can do to stay safe.

How Romance Scams Work

  • A scammer creates a convincing online persona using stolen photos and facts and even AI.
  • They move fast by expressing affection early and asking to take conversations off-platform so it feels more private.
  • Soon, they may ask for money for emergencies, travel, or investment-like opportunities.
  • They avoid real-life interaction, claiming reasons that sound too familiar not to believe.

Warning Signs to Watch For

  • Affection or declarations of love coming too early.
  • Refusal to video chat or meet in person.
  • Requests that the relationship transfer to email, phone, or messaging apps.
  • Pressure for money, especially via wire transfers, gift cards, or shared-access platforms.

Protect Yourself (and Those You Care About)

  • Pause before engaging financially. Only send money to people you know well and have met in person.
  • Verify their identity. Conduct a reverse image search of profile pictures to determine if they originate from another source.
  • Talk it out. Scammers count on secrecy. Calling someone you trust can help clarify things fast.
  • Report suspicious activity. On social platforms, dating apps, and to LCFCU if your accounts have been compromised.

If You Think It’s Happening to You

There’s no shame. Romance scams are emotionally manipulative and expertly disguised. Immediately report it to:

  • The Federal Trade Commission (reportfraud.ftc.gov), and
  • Your local authorities or LCFCU, so we can help protect your account and plan next steps.

At Library of Congress FCU, your trust and your security go hand in hand. Romance scams aim to take what you trust the most, your heart and money. Being alert is your best protection.
