Protecting Your Refund (and Your Peace of Mind)

Tax season is busy. You’re gathering documents, double-checking numbers, maybe even thinking ahead to how you’ll use your refund. It’s a lot to manage, and scammers know that.

While you’re focused on filing accurately and on time, fraudsters are looking for moments of urgency, confusion, or distraction. At LCFCU, we want to help you stay one step ahead, calmly and confidently.

Here’s what to watch for this season.

The “IRS” Calling With Urgency
You get a call claiming you owe back taxes. The person on the line sounds official. They say you must pay immediately or face penalties.

Pause.

The IRS does not demand payment by phone. They do not request gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency.

If you receive a suspicious call, hang up. Go directly to IRS.gov for official information. When in doubt, talk to someone you trust before taking action. Slowing down is often the smartest move you can make.

Emails That Look Legitimate
Phishing emails have become increasingly polished. They may include official logos or reference “tax verification” or “refund confirmation.”

Red flag: an unexpected message asking you to click a link and provide personal information.

Instead of clicking, type the official website directly into your browser. Protect your Social Security number the same way you protect your debit card PIN, carefully and intentionally.

“Fast Refund” Promises
Some services advertise guaranteed maximum refunds or instant advances with minimal documentation. If it sounds rushed or overly convenient, take a closer look. Be cautious of preparers who:

  • Charge fees based on a percentage of your refund
  • Refuse to sign your return
  • Encourage you to claim credits you don’t understand

Your refund should never feel pressured, confusing, or hurried. If it does, that’s your signal to step back.

Identity Theft and Early Filing
Tax-related identity theft occurs when someone files a return using your Social Security number before you do.

Filing early can help reduce this risk. Monitoring your accounts and reviewing your credit report regularly adds another layer of protection. Small proactive steps now can prevent much larger headaches later.

If Something Feels Off, Call Us
Fraud prevention is part of how we serve our members. LCFCU offers account alerts, secure digital banking tools, and real people who will take the time to walk through your concerns.
If something doesn’t sit right, call us. It is always better to ask than to guess. There is no such thing as a “silly” security question.

Tax season does not have to feel stressful. With awareness, intention, and the right support, you can protect your refund and your peace of mind.

We’re here to help you stay safe and confident this tax season. Explore our website, call or stop by a branch to connect with our team.
