Smart Spending for a Smart Fall

We’ve officially hit the season of sharpened pencils, early alarm clocks, and “I need this by tomorrow.” Whether you’re sending a little one to pre-K or helping a college student navigate tuition payments, back-to-school season tends to hit both hearts and wallets.

At LCFCU, we know this time of year can feel like a whirlwind. That’s why we pulled together a quick budget bootcamp, real-life tips to help you prep, save, and start the year on solid financial footing.

  1. Take Inventory First
Dig through drawers and closets, chances are, you already have more supplies than you think.
  2. Sort Needs vs. Wants
Focus on the essentials: notebooks, pencils, lunch gear, and clothes that actually fit. Fun extras can wait.
  3. Set a Budget per Category
Break your budget into buckets: school supplies, clothing, tech, and lunch items.
  4. Check for Local Resources
Many communities offer free school supply drives or gently-used uniform swaps. Don’t miss out!
  5. Time Your Shopping
Keep an eye out for sales and tax-free weekends, it pays to plan ahead.
  6. Buy in Bulk… Smartly
Split multi-packs of glue sticks, pens, and notebooks with a neighbor or friend group.
  7. Reuse What Still Works
Backpacks, lunchboxes, pencil cases, if they’re in good shape, they’re still good to go.
  8. Loop in the Kids
Give them a mini budget for fun extras and let them make some decisions, hello, financial literacy!
  9. Pack Smarter Lunches
Plan weekly meals around what’s on sale. Bonus: Involve the kids to cut down on food waste.
  10. Plan for Next Season
Think ahead to winter gear, after-school activities, or upcoming tech needs, and start saving now.

Real Talk: Back-to-School Isn’t One Size Fits All

Every family’s situation looks different. Some are budgeting for new calculators. Others are worried about grocery costs or aftercare fees. That’s why LCFCU is committed to meeting you where you are, with tools, resources, and one-on-one support when you need it.

You don’t have to do it perfectly. You just have to plan with purpose.

Let’s make this fall a smart one.

And if your budget could use a boost, a check-in, or a fresh start, we’re always here.
